Well Garnet, I guess you have to live in the culture to begin to understand the whys and wherefores... one of our friends has lived here for over 40 years and she still finds it confusing.

I guess it is one of the reasons why many "alien" societies view some "western" societies with a degree of dismay - all of us have cultural differences, but not everyone is prepared to acknowledge that fact.

LOL...so then you would have to go the person he reffered you to and tell them you were refered to them?

Seemingly strange custom? More like foriegn perhaps, but incidently, what is normal? Who decides?

Well, if the person that you don't know indicates that he/she would like to be introduced, the person that you do know will indicate that... or vice versa. There are many other seemingly "strange" customs.

For example, when I first came to live here I wanted some manure for my new potager (vegetable garden). I knew that my neighbour had tons (he keeps cows) and I asked him directly (in my ignorance) if I could buy some from him. This question received a fairly terse "No".

What I should have asked him was "Do you know anyone that has manure for sale?". That way his "No" would not have caused offense to either of us. :)

Curious how you meet new people in France? Pretty much works the exact opposite here, considered rude not to be introduced.

In France, if you were to meet a French person that you know, who happens to be with another French person that you don't know, you will not be introduced to that other French person.

This is due to the French attitude of "toujours la politesse" (always be polite).

The other French person might no want to be introduced to you. 8)

I totally agree. I really like meeting people mainly to become friends with them and if it works that they might be interested in what I do, then that is even better. But I am very careful about not pushing my business on anyone simple because what if it doesn't work out. Just this morning, I told one person that wanted to join a program that I was in, not to join, cause the program was having some troubles.

The way I see it, if your out to sign up every single THING that draws breath, you ain't really out to help anyone.

People are unique, what works for one person simply does not for another. Furthermore, if you are involving people in something they aren't really confortable with, you are going to burn them AND YOURSELF in the long run!

I consider the business partners I have as friends, I wouldn't refer someone I don't know or like.
