It never ceases to amaze me how many people sign up on a business networking site and automatically confuse their business with themselves.  I would call it a newbie mistake but so called "seasoned" marketers do the same thing.  Every business networking site I have ever joined gives you a profile page.  Do you know what that profile page is for?  It's to capture the interest of other network members so they will make contact with you!

All to often the internet marketer uses their profile page as an ad page.  That's not what it is for, it's your introduction!  We get introduced to new people all the time by our friends.  When they introduce you, do they give a long involved ad about your business or do they tell the person they are introducing things about you?  Odds are whatever they tell the new person they will not concentrate on your business, They will say something specifically about you, and that is what your profile page should say.

So let me ask, if I were to click on your profile right now, what would it tell me?  Something specific about you such as your hobbies, your likes, are you a parent?  Or will I find a commercial pushing everything I don't want to know about your business?

Let me put it this way, I don't want a "business" on my friends list, you can't be friends with a business.  I want people on my friends list.  People with interests and hobbies likes and dislikes, somebody human like me.  I will get to know other people and interact with them.  I'm not going to waste my time getting to know a thing.  Your business is a thing!  I will take my time getting to know you but  first you must show me you are human, you have to capture my interest.

Let your profile page do it's job and introduce YOU!

Just noticing how many empty profiles are on the site or not empty but an ad full of information about a business or business opportunity program etc.

There is a section called "About me" It doesn't say "About my business". Why is it so difficult for people to understand the difference? Tell us about you in your about me section, not your "opportunity du jour." Bet you will catch folks interest if they see something about you that they can relate to rather than your business.

Please fill out the profiles correctly. You have a business which should lead you to put your business information in the "Haves" section. Profile pages full of all that business information under about me is nothing more than an advertisement masquerading as a profile. Sell YOU folks, not your business!

I know I would much rather see some thing that I can use to connect with someone rather than another ad

Well it depends on which impression you want to make good (something informative about yourself) or bad (hey look at all this information an\bout my business!)

pplcheryl63: I
Well, I suppose they can suit themselves *sighs* Wonder which leaves a greater impression on people? A business plug? Or someone who is open and forthcoming(authentic)?

I'm sure many have a hard enough time posting something about themselves without asking for personality too!
