I had an interesting conversation today on the benefits of e-mail and snail mail. Basically a lively discussion over which was better and surprisingly the end result was that snail mail is better for marketing than e-mail.
While e-mail is cheaper and quicker it has major drawbacks pointed out by all of us involved in the discussion. It's easy to send and e-mail to multiple recipients but it's also just as easy for those recipients to hit the delete button without ever opening your message. As a matter of fact is seemed that was the standard for e-mail we did not request. Also there is the problem of e-mail getting misdirecting into a junk folder. Normally we seemed to only react positively to email from friends or business contacts we already knew.
However snail mail has far more benefits than drawbacks. The main drawback to snail mail was the cost. even a direct mailing postcard gets seen on the way to the trashbin. However cards announcements etc almost always get read. It doesn't matter if it is promotional or not, it gets opened if it looks like a card even if we didn't know the sender! The other thing that was brought up was "Hidden card syndrome". You put a card on your desk and it gets mixed in with paperwork or other mail and gets hidden for a while. One day while going through the stuff on your desk the card you got a couple of months ago suddenly pops up to remind you of a business contact you had forgotten about...
